Course Overview

Picture a lab with three web servers and a BIG-IP system with nothing configured. By the end of this F5 BIG-IP LTM training you will have placed them behind a virtual server, attached monitors, tested persistence, and watched each change appear in the local traffic statistics. That build-and-observe approach is how F5’s Configuring BIG-IP LTM: Local Traffic Manager course works.

You begin with the system itself. Initial setup covers licensing, provisioning the LTM module, and network configuration. You then archive the configuration so a known-good copy always exists. A short review of nodes, pools, pool members, address translation, and TMSH sets the baseline.

Then the real building starts. You create pools with different load balancing methods and see how distribution changes when you move from a static method to a dynamic one. You add monitors, including custom HTTP checks, then take a server offline and watch the monitor react. You configure forwarding virtual servers and learn the order of precedence BIG-IP uses when more than one virtual server could match a packet.

SNATs come next, because return traffic has to pass back through BIG-IP. You build SNAT pools, see why VIP bounceback needs special handling, and finish with a review of how packets move through the system. Profiles follow. TCP, HTTP, HTTP/2, OneConnect, compression, and caching are each tested against live lab traffic, and client SSL profiles for SSL offloading are revisited as part of the profile review.

The last section moves to customization and protection. You write and debug an iRule, then compare it with a local traffic policy that solves a similar problem. You also enable SYN check and other LTM settings against common attacks.

Everything feeds a final lab project in which you assemble a complete configuration. It mirrors the data center traffic management work you’ll do on a live network, without the risk.

Course Objectives

On completion, you will be able to:

  • Initialize a BIG-IP system with licensing, LTM provisioning, network settings, and a saved configuration archive.
  • Create virtual servers, pools, and pool members, and verify traffic with local traffic statistics.
  • Compare static and dynamic load balancing methods by watching how lab traffic is distributed.
  • Customize monitors, including HTTP content checks, alias addresses, and application check monitors.
  • Configure forwarding virtual servers and explain virtual server order of precedence.
  • Build SNAT pools and listeners, resolve VIP bounceback, and trace packet processing through BIG-IP.
  • Apply persistence and profiles, including cookie persistence, OneConnect, HTTP/2, and compression.
  • Write and debug iRules, and configure local traffic policies as an alternative.
  • Complete an end-to-end LTM configuration in a final lab project.

FAQs

What exactly is Configuring BIG-IP LTM: Local Traffic Manager?

It is F5’s advanced course on configuring and managing the BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager module. It expands on Administering BIG-IP with much more detail on local traffic, using the Configuration utility, TMSH, and Linux commands. The course is lab-heavy, and it ends with a final lab project that combines the main topics into a single working setup.

Which BIG-IP LTM features will I configure in the labs?

You will configure most of the features LTM uses to manage traffic. These include virtual servers, pools, load balancing methods, health monitors, persistence profiles, SNAT pools, and TCP, HTTP, and OneConnect profiles. You also work with VLAN tagging, route domains, iRules, and local traffic policies, and you apply LTM protections against SYN floods and common HTTP threats.

Who gets the most from a lab-based LTM course?

Engineers who already know BIG-IP basics and want to configure it with confidence get the most from it. That includes BIG-IP administrators, network and application delivery engineers, operations staff, and DevOps engineers who change BIG-IP configurations. Seeing each setting change live traffic in the lab helps when you later make the same change in production.

Which F5 prerequisites apply before I enroll?

F5 requires one of the following: the Administering BIG-IP instructor-led course, F5 Certified BIG-IP Administrator status, or a pass on the Administering BIG-IP Equivalency Assessment. F5 also expects networking knowledge such as OSI encapsulation, TCP/IP, routing and switching, ARP, and NAT, and suggests familiarity with HTTP and TLS/SSL. Two free self-paced courses, Getting Started with BIG-IP and Getting Started with LTM, are optional.

What will I be able to do after the labs?

You will be able to build a complete LTM configuration from a blank system and verify that it works. That covers setting up pools and monitors, choosing persistence, configuring SNATs correctly, tuning profiles, and writing simple iRules or local traffic policies. You will also know how to confirm behavior using statistics instead of guessing.

How does the course relate to F5 certification exams?

The course is a training program, not an exam, and attending it does not result in certification. F5 certifications require passing separate exams. The F5 Certified Administrator, BIG-IP needs five exams (F5CAB1 to F5CAB5), and the LTM Specialist credential needs exams 301a and 301b plus the administrator certification. The course content can support your studies, but F5 doesn’t link it to a specific exam.

Why spend lab time on load balancing, monitors, persistence, and availability?

These settings decide whether users reach a working application, and mistakes often show up only under real traffic. Testing them in a lab shows how a pool reacts when a server fails, why a session breaks without persistence, and how monitors protect availability. It is far cheaper to learn these lessons in a lab than during a production incident.

Can this training help me grow professionally in Oman?

It can strengthen your practical BIG-IP LTM skills, which are used by organizations that run critical applications on F5. Hands-on experience can make you more confident with configuration changes and troubleshooting. Any career benefits depend on your background, your employer, and the opportunities available, so the course supports your growth without guaranteeing an outcome.
