Course Overview

Picture the first alert of a SOC shift: a finance account has logged in from an unfamiliar location, followed by a burst of failed attempts on another system. Is it an attack, a traveller, or a misconfigured script? RSOC training teaches analysts to answer questions like that methodically. The Rocheston SOC Analyst (RSOC) course is a three-day, hands-on programme built around the work an analyst actually does on shift.

Day-to-day SOC work follows a pattern, and the course follows it too. It starts with the foundations: how a security operations centre is organised, the network security basics behind most alerts, and the Rocheston Cybersecurity Framework that structures defensive work. Next comes security information and event management. Learners see how a SIEM collects logs, correlates events and raises alerts, then practise incident detection and analysis.

Once an alert looks real, the incident response process takes over. Learners practise containment, documentation and escalation, supported by threat analysis that explains what an attacker may be trying to achieve. The final track looks forward, introducing threat hunting and Rocheston Vulnerability Vines so analysts can find weaknesses before they lead to incidents.

Labs run on Rocheston Rose OS. The alert types include phishing, malware, brute force, privilege escalation, lateral movement, data exfiltration, and cloud anomalies.

Back at work, the method matters most: gather context, judge severity, decide, document, escalate. Analysts who follow it consistently make fewer mistakes and hand over cleaner cases to incident responders. Rocheston’s wider portfolio is listed on our Rocheston training page.

Course Structure and Key Details

RSOC follows the order of real SOC work. It starts with foundations, moves into monitoring and detection, then response, and finishes with proactive defence. All of it is covered in three days.

Learners begin with SOC Foundations, made up of Introduction to Security Operations, Network Security Fundamentals, and the Rocheston Cybersecurity Framework. This stage explains SOC roles and shifts, along with the network basics that make alerts readable.

The programme then moves into SIEM and Log Analysis. Through the Security Information and Event Management and Incident Detection and Analysis modules, learners review correlated events in a SIEM and investigate suspicious log activity.

Next comes Incident Response Operations, which pairs the Incident Response Process with Threat Analysis. Learners practise containing incidents, documenting evidence, and escalating cases with full context. The final stage, Threat Hunting and Defensive Improvement, covers Threat Hunting and Rocheston Vulnerability Vines, where learners search for hidden threats and review weaknesses proactively.

Across three days and nine modules, RSOC prepares learners for Tier 1 SOC analyst work and introduces Tier 2 investigation and threat hunting. Every practical exercise runs in Rocheston Rose OS, a lab environment built for realistic, simulated SOC investigations. Rocheston offers classroom or virtual instructor-led training, blended learning, and optional self-paced online study, and our Muscat team can confirm which format suits your schedule.

The recommended background is basic networking, including IP addresses and ports, plus operating system basics, log concepts, and familiarity with firewalls, malware, phishing, and authentication. Previous SOC experience is not needed.

Assessment is through a 100-question exam combining multiple-choice, true/false, and short-answer questions. It lasts two hours, has a 70% pass mark, and is taken online with Ramsys proctoring. A Rocheston certificate is awarded only to candidates who pass, not to everyone who attends. For further study, Rocheston suggests RCCE Level 1 for broader foundations, RCCE Level 2 for advanced Red and Blue Team work, RCCI for forensics, CCO for compliance, or RCAI for AI engineering.

Course Objectives

  • Investigate simulated alerts on Rose OS, including suspicious logins and brute force attempts.
  • Detect signs of lateral movement, privilege escalation, and data exfiltration in logs.
  • Respond to confirmed incidents using structured containment and escalation steps.
  • Assess threats by linking indicators to likely attacker objectives.
  • Identify weaknesses proactively through threat hunting and Rocheston Vulnerability Vines.
  • Document investigations clearly so cases can be handed over without lost context.

Security Operations Centre Course in Muscat and Sohar for Vision 2040

Oman Vision 2040 places the digital economy at the centre of diversification, and the ports, logistics hubs, oil and gas operators, and banks behind that growth run systems that must be watched around the clock. Oman National CERT, part of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, coordinates national incident response and issues security guidance to public and private organisations. SOC analyst training in Oman gives professionals in Muscat, Sohar and Duqm the monitoring, triage and escalation skills needed to work effectively within that wider response structure. A logistics operator, for example, benefits from analysts who can spot an unusual remote login to a shipping system and escalate it quickly. Upcoming dates appear on our Muscat course timetable, and employers can request an in-house SOC analyst course for their team. Ask our team for the outline and a suitable start date.

FAQs

How long is the RSOC course?

The RSOC course runs for three days. Over that time, learners work through nine modules grouped into four tracks: SOC foundations, SIEM and log analysis, incident response operations, and threat hunting and defensive improvement. The short format suits working professionals and teams that need practical SOC skills without a long absence from their roles.

What is Rose OS in the RSOC course?

Rose OS is Rocheston’s hands-on lab environment, used on RSOC for simulated SOC work. It gives learners a realistic setting to investigate alerts, review logs, and practise incident response without touching live production systems. Working in a controlled environment lets analysts make mistakes and learn from them safely.

Is RSOC training in Muscat suitable for NOC engineers?

Yes, NOC engineers are well placed to move into SOC work. They already monitor systems, read alerts, and follow escalation procedures. RSOC adds the security perspective: recognising attack patterns, analysing logs for malicious activity, and following the incident response process. That makes the move from network operations to security operations far smoother.

What is the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 SOC analysts?

Tier 1 analysts handle the first review of alerts. They triage, gather context, and escalate cases that look genuine. Tier 2 analysts take escalated cases, investigate more deeply, confirm scope, and coordinate containment. RSOC focuses on Tier 1 readiness and introduces Tier 2 workflows, so learners understand what happens after they escalate.

How does log analysis help detect attacks?

Logs record what users, systems, and applications actually did, so they often contain the first evidence of an attack. Repeated failed logins can indicate brute force, a new administrator account can signal privilege escalation, and large outbound transfers can point to exfiltration. Reading logs well lets analysts confirm or rule out a threat quickly.

What background do I need for the RSOC course?

Rocheston recommends basic IT, networking, and security knowledge. That includes IP addresses and ports, operating system basics, logging concepts, and how firewalls, malware, phishing, and authentication work. Learners who need to strengthen their networking first can take our networking fundamentals course before enrolling.

How is the RSOC exam taken?

The RSOC exam is taken online and proctored through Rocheston’s Ramsys system, with registration through Rocheston’s certification portal. It contains 100 questions in multiple-choice, true/false, and short-answer formats, with two hours allowed and a 70% passing score. A certificate is issued only after the candidate passes.

Why do SOC analysts need to understand attacker techniques?

Analysts who understand how attackers operate can judge alerts far more accurately. Knowing that phishing often leads to credential theft and then lateral movement helps an analyst connect separate alerts into one incident. That understanding also improves escalation notes, because the analyst can explain what the attacker is likely to try next.
