Veritas NetBackup Administration
Course Overview
Large organizations rarely protect one tidy server room. They protect several data centers, a growing virtual estate, and a share of workloads in the cloud, all within backup windows that never seem long enough. Veritas NetBackup Administration training prepares you to run that kind of environment with control and a clear plan for recovery.
NetBackup is an enterprise backup platform built around three tiers. A primary server holds the configuration and the catalog. Media servers move data to storage, and clients are the systems being protected. Understanding how those tiers share the load is the first step in running NetBackup at scale, so that is where the course begins.
Scale puts pressure on storage first. You will configure BasicDisk and AdvancedDisk units, group them into storage unit groups, and deploy Media Server Deduplication Pool (MSDP) to cut the space that repeated data consumes. Cloud storage and immutable WORM targets extend that design to off-site copies. Storage lifecycle policies then automate the flow. For example, one can write tonight’s backup to local MSDP and replicate a copy to a second site.
Busy environments also need tight control over who can do what. The course covers the NetBackup web UI, role-based access control, single sign-on, and certificate administration. Policies and schedules follow. You will also learn NetBackup Accelerator and multiple data streams for large file systems that strain the backup window.
Virtual machines get two full modules. You will protect VMware workloads, use instant access, and restore VMs without installing agents inside them. Catalog protection, ransomware recovery readiness through anomaly detection and malware scanning, reporting, VxUpdate upgrades, and log collection complete the course.
NetBackup is now part of Cohesity, and the current official course is Cohesity NetBackup 11.0: Administration. Teams searching for Veritas NetBackup training will find the same product under its current name. The NetBackup administration skills you take away apply to any large estate, with disaster recovery and data protection built into daily routines.
Course Objectives
After the course, you will be able to:
- Explain how the primary server, media servers, and clients cooperate during backup and restore operations.
- Work in the NetBackup web UI to manage workload assets, user roles, single sign-on, and alerts.
- Configure, manage, and revoke NetBackup security certificates.
- Plan and deploy MSDP deduplication alongside BasicDisk, AdvancedDisk, and storage unit groups.
- Build storage lifecycle policies that duplicate or replicate backups to a second storage target.
- Design file system policies and schedules, and tune large backups with Accelerator and multiple data streams.
- Back up and recover VMware virtual machines, including continuous data protection and instant rollback.
- Protect and recover the NetBackup catalog, and use immutable storage and malware scanning to strengthen ransomware readiness.
- Produce reports, upgrade with VxUpdate, and gather logs for support cases.
Prerequisites
Students should be familiar with general network and storage concepts, and the administration and configuration of Windows or Linux operating systems. Knowledge of virtualization and cloud technologies is useful.
Target Audience
- Backup and recovery administrators: learn to design policies and verify restores rather than only watching jobs.
- NetBackup operators and administrators: close gaps in daily tasks such as storage units, certificates, and catalog backups.
- Storage administrators: see how disk, MSDP, cloud, and immutable storage are presented to NetBackup.
- Windows and Linux/UNIX system administrators: understand what happens on protected servers and how to restore them.
- Data protection engineers: connect retention, duplication, and immutability choices to recovery objectives.
- Data center and infrastructure specialists: plan media server placement and storage capacity with real product knowledge.
- Implementation consultants and support engineers: build a consistent baseline for deploying and supporting NetBackup.
- Teams running or planning NetBackup: agree on shared terms and methods before or after go-live.

Vision 2030 has pushed digital services across banking, energy, telecom, and government, and every new platform adds data that must be recoverable. Organizations in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam often run large, mixed estates where a failed restore quickly becomes a business problem. Regulation adds weight. The National Cybersecurity Authority’s Essential Cybersecurity Controls include backup and recovery management, and the Personal Data Protection Law, overseen by SDAIA, sets duties for handling personal data. Neither names a specific product, but both make tested, well-governed backups part of normal compliance work. Our Veritas NetBackup Administration training in Saudi Arabia shows administrators how to meet those expectations inside NetBackup, with protected catalogs, immutable copies, clear reports, and rehearsed restores. Teams comparing a NetBackup course in Riyadh or NetBackup administration training in Jeddah can also review our cybersecurity compliance training and the broader enterprise backup and storage courses. FAQs
What is this course, and why does it mention both Veritas and Cohesity?
It is the core administration course for NetBackup, the enterprise backup and recovery software. Veritas developed NetBackup for many years. In December 2024, Cohesity completed its combination with Veritas’s data protection business, and NetBackup is now part of Cohesity. That is why the current official course is titled Cohesity NetBackup 11.0: Administration, even though many teams still search for it under the Veritas name.
What will I learn about NetBackup storage, policies, and recovery?
You will learn the full chain from storage setup to restore. On the storage side, that includes BasicDisk, AdvancedDisk, storage unit groups, MSDP deduplication, cloud storage, and immutable WORM storage. Policies and schedules decide what gets backed up and when. Recovery covers file restores, VMware restores including instant access, storage lifecycle policies for extra copies, and protection and recovery of the NetBackup catalog.
Which IT roles in Saudi organizations benefit most from this course?
Roles that own or touch backup operations benefit most. In banks, energy companies, telecom operators, and government entities, that usually means backup and NetBackup administrators, storage administrators, and the Windows and Linux teams who manage protected servers. Data protection engineers, data center specialists, and implementation consultants also gain from it, especially when they support large or multi-site NetBackup environments.
Do I need prior experience before enrolling?
You need general IT experience, but not NetBackup experience. The official course page recommends Windows or UNIX/Linux system administration skills. It also recommends a working grasp of data protection terms, storage concepts, virtualization and cloud technologies, and basic networking and security. If you manage servers today and understand how disks and networks fit together, you are likely ready for this course.
What will I be able to do after the training?
You will be able to configure, operate, and recover a NetBackup environment. Typical tasks include building MSDP storage, writing policies and schedules, tuning large file system backups with Accelerator, and protecting VMware virtual machines. You will also manage certificates and role-based access, set up storage lifecycle policies, protect the catalog, generate reports, and plan upgrades with VxUpdate.
Can this training lead to a Cohesity NetBackup certification?
It can help you prepare, but it does not grant a certification on its own. Cohesity lists this course among the recommended training for exam COH285. That exam leads to the Cohesity Certified Protection Professional credential for NetBackup and NetBackup Appliances. To earn the credential, you must pass the exam separately. Cohesity also recommends practical experience before you sit it, including with NetBackup Appliances.
How do immutable storage and deduplication help with ransomware?
Immutable storage stops backup copies from being altered or deleted, and deduplication makes it affordable to keep more of those copies. Attackers often try to destroy backups before encrypting production systems. MSDP cloud immutable (WORM) storage blocks that route for the length of the retention period. MSDP also reduces the space each backup consumes, which supports longer retention. The course also covers anomaly detection and malware scanning.
Will this course help me move into a senior data protection role?
It can strengthen your case, but no course guarantees a promotion. The training builds the hands-on NetBackup administration skills that senior roles expect. It also gives you a clear understanding of storage design, recovery, and ransomware readiness. Combined with real experience and, if you choose, a separately passed certification exam, it supports a credible path toward more responsibility in data protection.
