Course Overview

When a mobile money platform or online banking service doubles its user base, the servers are rarely the first thing to fail. Connection handling usually is. BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager sits in front of those servers, spreads the load, reuses connections, and keeps unhealthy servers out of rotation. This F5 BIG-IP LTM training shows you how to configure it for growth.

Scaling starts with load balancing choices. Static methods are simple, but dynamic methods respond to real server conditions, and the course compares the options in detail. Priority group activation lets you add capacity in stages. Ratio weighting lets newer, larger servers take a bigger share of requests.

Connection efficiency is the next lever. OneConnect lets BIG-IP reuse server-side connections across many client requests. TCP Express and tuned TCP profiles help clients on slower mobile networks without penalizing users on fast links. Compression and HTTP caching take work off the application servers, and HTTP/2 profile options support clients using the newer protocol.

As traffic grows, the chance of a server failing under load grows too. Health monitors at layers 3, 4, and 7 catch problems early. Application check monitors confirm that a service returns the right response, not just that a port is open. SNAT pools help when a single translation address could run short of ports during heavy connection volume.

The course is F5’s Configuring BIG-IP LTM: Local Traffic Manager. It also covers BIG-IP setup and archiving, persistence, virtual server types, route domains, iRules, and local traffic policies, plus LTM features that help resist SYN floods. SSL offloading is reviewed as part of profile basics. Labs use the Configuration utility, TMSH, and Linux commands, so you can watch the statistics change as you tune each setting.

Device-level high availability is covered in Administering BIG-IP. This course focuses on keeping a growing service fast and responsive at the application layer, which is where most scaling problems first appear.

Course Objectives

You will learn to:

  • Distribute growing traffic with static and dynamic load balancing methods, ratio weighting, and priority group activation.
  • Reduce server load using OneConnect, compression, and HTTP caching.
  • Tune TCP Express and TCP profiles for clients on different network conditions.
  • Monitor services with layer 3, 4, and 7 checks, including application check monitors.
  • Configure SNAT pools and SNAT listeners to support high connection volumes.
  • Maintain session consistency with cookie and other persistence profiles.
  • Set up and archive a BIG-IP system, including licensing and provisioning.
  • Segment traffic with route domains and configure forwarding virtual servers.
  • Customize and protect delivery with iRules, local traffic policies, and SYN flood defenses.

Prior Knowledge

Students must complete one of the following F5 prerequisites before attending this course:

  • Administering BIG-IP (instructor-led training)
  • F5 Certified BIG-IP Administrator
  • Administering BIG-IP Equivalency Assessment

The following free Self-Directed Training (SDT) courses, although optional, are helpful for any student with limited BIG-IP administration and configuration experience:

  • Getting Started with BIG-IP
  • Getting Started with Local Traffic Manager (LTM)

General network technology knowledge and experience are recommended before attending any F5 Global Training Services instructor-led course, including OSI model encapsulation, routing and switching, Ethernet and ARP, TCP/IP concepts, IP addressing and subnetting, NAT and private IP addressing, NAT and private IP addressing, default gateway, network firewalls, and LAN vs. WAN.

Prospective students should have a basic understanding of BIG-IP local traffic concepts, including virtual servers, pools, health monitors, and profiles. Familiarity with web application delivery, the TCP and HTTP protocols, and TLS/SSL is also suggested.

Target Audience

  • F5 BIG-IP administrators: Go beyond day-one administration into the LTM features used in production.
  • Network engineers: Understand how SNATs, VLANs, and route domains fit BIG-IP into your network.
  • Application delivery engineers: Get precise control over persistence, profiles, and traffic customization.
  • Load balancing specialists: Compare load balancing methods and monitor designs in detail.
  • Systems and server administrators: See how BIG-IP decides whether your servers receive traffic.
  • Data center and infrastructure specialists: Plan how LTM sits within multi-tier, multi-site designs.
  • Network operations staff: Read statistics and monitor status to diagnose problems faster.
  • DevOps and platform engineers: Use TMSH, iRules, and local traffic policies to automate and customize delivery.
  • Teams planning a BIG-IP LTM deployment: Learn the design decisions before they become production problems.

F5 BIG-IP LTM Training in Tanzania’s Digital Economy

Mobile money, digital banking, and online public services have expanded the number of customer transactions that depend on application uptime. Our F5 BIG-IP LTM training in Tanzania helps engineers in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, and Dodoma configure Local Traffic Manager so those services stay responsive as demand grows. The course pays close attention to scaling features such as OneConnect, SNAT pools, and dynamic load balancing, which suit environments with high transaction volume. Organizations handling customer data under the Personal Data Protection Act, or operating in sectors overseen by TCRA, also need delivery infrastructure that is well documented and carefully controlled. The course’s emphasis on structured configuration and LTM security features supports that discipline. This F5 LTM course in Dar es Salaam builds on our Administering BIG-IP course. Teams can also explore our F5 application delivery training and options for private team training. To plan the next step, view the course outline or speak with our training team.

FAQs

What is F5's Configuring BIG-IP LTM: Local Traffic Manager?

It is F5’s official advanced course on configuring and running BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager. The course builds on Administering BIG-IP and teaches how LTM distributes, monitors, persists, and optimizes application traffic. It uses lectures and hands-on labs and finishes with a final lab project that brings the skills together.

How does BIG-IP LTM help applications scale, and what topics are included?

LTM helps applications scale by spreading traffic across servers and cutting connection overhead. The course covers load balancing methods, priority group activation, OneConnect, TCP and HTTP profiles, compression, caching, and SNAT pools. It also includes health monitors, persistence, virtual server types, route domains, iRules, local traffic policies, and protection against SYN floods.

Which professionals is this course meant for?

It is meant for system and network administrators responsible for BIG-IP LTM. Application delivery engineers, operations staff, and DevOps engineers supporting high-volume services such as banking or payments will also benefit. You should already know BIG-IP basics, since the course goes into more depth than an introductory class.

Which skills will I take back to my job?

You’ll take back the ability to tune BIG-IP for growth and stability. That includes choosing load balancing methods, configuring OneConnect and compression, sizing SNAT pools, writing effective monitors, and selecting persistence profiles. You’ll also be able to build basic iRules and local traffic policies, then confirm improvements using local traffic statistics.

Do I become F5 certified by completing this training?

No. Completing training doesn’t award F5 certification. You must pass F5’s exams separately. The F5 Certified Administrator, BIG-IP requires exams F5CAB1 to F5CAB5. The F5 Certified Technology Specialist, BIG-IP LTM requires exams 301a and 301b, plus a valid administrator certification. The course covers LTM material that can support study, but F5 does not tie it to one exam.

Why do load balancing, monitoring, persistence, and high availability matter for growing services?

They let a service grow without users noticing strain or failures. Load balancing adds capacity by spreading demand. Health monitors remove struggling servers before they cause errors. Persistence keeps transactions on one server when the application requires it. Together, these settings deliver application-level high availability as traffic increases.

How does the course help with my professional growth?

It gives you specialist skills in scaling and stabilizing application delivery on BIG-IP, which are relevant wherever F5 runs critical services. These skills can make you more effective in planning and troubleshooting. The course doesn’t promise employment, promotion, or salary changes. Those depend on your experience and your organization.
