Course Overview

If you already administer BIG-IP, you know virtual servers, self IPs, and route domains. Advanced Firewall Manager adds security controls to those same objects, which makes it a natural next module to learn. This F5 BIG-IP AFM training is designed to make that step structured rather than trial and error.

F5’s Configuring BIG-IP AFM: Advanced Firewall Manager starts with a familiar chapter on setting up the BIG-IP system. It then introduces AFM, its availability, and the Security menu where it lives. From there, the course builds the network firewall concept by concept. You learn which firewall contexts exist and the order in which they are processed. You see why ADC mode suits a BIG-IP that mainly delivers applications, and why firewall mode suits one that must deny anything not explicitly allowed.

Rule building follows. You create rules and policies, use address lists, port lists, and rule lists to keep things manageable, and add schedules and geolocation where they make sense. The course also shows how to spot redundant, conflicting, and stale rules early, a habit that saves time as the rule base grows.

Logging and reporting come next, because you can’t run a firewall you can’t see. Logging profiles, log publishers, event logs, and AFM reports show what the firewall is doing. Packet Tester and Flow Inspector help you check your own work.

The second half covers threats that simple rules don’t handle. IP Intelligence blocks addresses with a poor reputation. Device DoS and DoS profiles defend against floods, while sweep flood protection and IP shunning deal with persistent attackers. DNS Firewall, DNS DoS, SIP DoS, port misuse policies, and network firewall iRules complete the material.

A final recap ties everything back to BIG-IP architecture and AFM packet processing. For an administrator moving into network firewall and DoS protection, it’s a practical first step into data center security.

Course Objectives

The course prepares you to:

  • Set up a BIG-IP system and locate AFM features in the Security menu.
  • Explain AFM firewall contexts and the order in which rules are processed.
  • Choose ADC mode or firewall mode based on how the BIG-IP is used.
  • Create rules, policies, address lists, port lists, rule lists, and schedules.
  • Keep a growing rule base clean by identifying redundant, conflicting, and stale rules.
  • Monitor firewall activity with logging profiles, event logs, reports, Packet Tester, and Flow Inspector.
  • Apply IP Intelligence to block sources with a poor reputation.
  • Configure device DoS, DoS profiles, sweep flood protection, and IP shunning.
  • Protect DNS and SIP traffic, and apply port misuse policies and network firewall iRules.

Course Prerequisites

Students must complete one of the following F5 prerequisites before attending this course:

  • Administering BIG-IP instructor-led course
  • F5 Certified BIG-IP Administrator

The following web-based courses, although optional, will be very helpful for any student with limited BIG-IP administration and configuration experience:

  • Getting Started with BIG-IP web-based training
  • Getting Started with BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) web-based training
  • Getting Started with BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager (AFM) web-based training

The following general network technology knowledge and experience are recommended before attending any F5 Global Training Services instructor-led course:

  • OSI model encapsulation
  • Routing and switching
  • Ethernet and ARP
  • TCP/IP concepts
  • IP addressing and subnetting
  • NAT and private IP addressing
  • Default gateway
  • Network firewalls
  • LAN vs. WAN

Target Audience

  • Network security engineers: Build layer 3 and 4 defenses on the platform that already fronts your applications.
  • Firewall administrators: Apply familiar rule and policy concepts to AFM's contexts and modes.
  • F5 BIG-IP administrators: Add firewall and DoS protection to systems you already manage.
  • Network engineers: See how AFM rules interact with self IPs, VLANs, and route domains.
  • Application delivery engineers: Protect virtual servers without adding a separate firewall hop.
  • Data center and infrastructure specialists: Plan where network firewall and DoS controls sit in your design.
  • Security operations staff: Use AFM logs, reports, and dashboards to investigate attacks.
  • Teams running or planning BIG-IP AFM: Agree on rule standards, logging, and DoS thresholds before rollout.

F5 BIG-IP AFM Training in Ethiopia for Growing Digital Services

Ethiopia’s national digital transformation strategy, the growth of mobile banking, and a more competitive telecom sector have put more services online and within reach of network-level attacks. Organizations need engineers who can apply firewall policies and DoS protection carefully, without disrupting the services customers rely on. Our F5 BIG-IP AFM training in Ethiopia helps BIG-IP administrators in Addis Ababa and Hawassa move into network firewall and DoS configuration in a structured way. Organizations that work with the Information Network Security Administration on security standards may also value the course’s emphasis on logging and reporting. Before booking this F5 firewall course in Addis Ababa, confirm that you meet F5’s prerequisites. Our Administering BIG-IP course covers the required foundation. You can also strengthen your networking and security fundamentals or explore the F5 course catalog. When you’re ready, review the outline or contact us to discuss your team’s starting point.

FAQs

What is the Configuring BIG-IP AFM course, and where does it fit?

It is F5’s course on configuring BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager, and it follows on from Administering BIG-IP. F5 classes it as a core-level course. It teaches you to add network firewall, DoS protection, and IP Intelligence to a BIG-IP system, with dedicated chapters on logging, reporting, DNS and SIP protection, and firewall iRules.

What does AFM do on a BIG-IP, and what will I study?

AFM adds a stateful network firewall and DoS protection to the BIG-IP platform. You will study firewall contexts, modes, rules, policies, and lists, then logging and reporting. Later chapters cover IP Intelligence, device DoS, DoS profiles, sweep flood, IP shunning, DNS Firewall, DNS and SIP DoS, port misuse, and network firewall iRules.

I manage BIG-IP but have not used AFM. Should I attend?

Yes, provided you meet F5’s prerequisites. The course is built for administrators who will configure and operate AFM, and it introduces the module from the beginning. Your existing knowledge of virtual servers, self IPs, and route domains will help, because AFM rules attach to those same objects.

What are F5's prerequisites for this course?

F5 requires the Administering BIG-IP course, the F5 Certified BIG-IP Administrator credential, or a pass on the Administering BIG-IP Equivalency Assessment. F5 also recommends knowledge of OSI encapsulation, routing and switching, Ethernet and ARP, TCP/IP, subnetting, NAT, default gateways, network firewalls, and LAN versus WAN. Free Getting Started courses, including one for AFM, are optional preparation.

How will my skills change after the course?

You will be able to protect BIG-IP-delivered services, not just deliver them. You will know how to place rules in the right context, choose a firewall mode, and keep policies tidy with lists and stale-rule checks. You’ll also configure DoS protection and IP Intelligence and use logs and reports to confirm results.

Can this course make me F5 certified?

Not on its own. The course is training, and F5 does not currently offer a dedicated AFM exam. Any F5 certification requires passing the relevant exams separately, such as F5CAB1 to F5CAB5 for F5 Certified Administrator, BIG-IP. The AFM course is skills-focused and can support your wider F5 learning.

Why should engineers learn firewall policies, DoS protection, and logging?

These controls decide whether services stay reachable and safe. Firewall policies limit exposure to what you intend to offer. DoS protection keeps floods from taking services offline. Logging lets you prove what happened and fix mistakes quickly, which matters as more customer services move online.

Will this course help my career?

It can strengthen your career foundation by adding network security skills to your BIG-IP experience. Those skills are useful wherever AFM protects critical services. The course doesn’t guarantee a new job, promotion, or higher pay. Results depend on your experience and the roles available to you.
