F5 Configuring BIG-IP LTM: Local Traffic Manager
Course Overview
Most organizations don’t let users connect straight to their application servers. They place a BIG-IP system in between, and the Local Traffic Manager module decides which server gets each connection, checks that the server is healthy, and shapes how traffic behaves on the way through. This F5 BIG-IP LTM training is built around that control point and what you can do with it.
The course is F5’s Configuring BIG-IP LTM: Local Traffic Manager, and it picks up where Administering BIG-IP leaves off. You start by setting up a BIG-IP system, covering licensing, provisioning, and archiving the configuration. A review of nodes, pools, virtual servers, and TMSH follows before the course moves into the detail that separates a lab setup from a production one.
Load balancing goes well past round robin. You compare member and node load balancing, use priority group activation to keep backup servers idle until they are needed, and set a fallback host for when nothing else is available. Health monitoring is covered at layers 3, 4, and 7, including custom HTTP monitors, alias address checks, and manual resume.
The next chapters focus on how traffic changes in flight. You work with cookie, SSL, and universal persistence, plus TCP and HTTP profiles, OneConnect, compression, and caching. Profile basics, including client SSL profiles used for SSL offloading, are reviewed as a foundation. You also configure forwarding virtual servers, SNAT pools, VLAN tagging, and route domains.
The final part covers customization and protection. You write and debug iRules, build local traffic policies, and use LTM features such as SYN check to defend against common network and HTTP attacks.
These skills apply directly to data center traffic management and to hybrid environments where applications run across several sites. In this course, application high availability comes from well-designed pools and monitors. Device-level failover between BIG-IP units is taught in Administering BIG-IP.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Set up a BIG-IP system, including licensing, module provisioning, network configuration, and configuration archives.
- Configure dynamic load balancing, priority group activation, and fallback hosts, and decide when member or node load balancing applies.
- Apply cookie, SSL, SIP, universal, and destination address affinity persistence, with default and fallback persistence and match across options.
- Create and customize health monitors, including HTTP content checks, alias monitoring, multiple monitors, and manual resume.
- Configure forwarding virtual servers and analyze how BIG-IP chooses between virtual servers by order of precedence.
- Apply SNATs, SNAT pools, and SNAT listeners, and resolve VIP bounceback.
- Customize traffic with TCP, HTTP, HTTP/2, OneConnect, compression, caching, and stream profiles.
- Write, test, and debug iRules, and build local traffic policies for common delivery tasks.
- Use LTM features, local traffic statistics, and F5 support tools to protect applications and troubleshoot delivery problems.

Applications now run across private data centers, colocation sites, and public clouds, and users expect each one to respond the same way wherever it is hosted. That consistency depends on careful traffic management, which is why our F5 BIG-IP LTM training focuses on configuration choices with real consequences: which load balancing method suits a pool, which monitor confirms a service is truly healthy, and which persistence method protects a user session. This F5 Local Traffic Manager course suits engineers in any industry who already administer BIG-IP and want deeper control. If you’re building a broader skill set, it pairs well with our Administering BIG-IP training, and you can compare it with other F5 application delivery and security courses. Teams supporting the wider network may also benefit from our network infrastructure and routing courses. FAQs
What is the F5 BIG-IP LTM course?
It is F5’s Configuring BIG-IP LTM: Local Traffic Manager course, an advanced class that builds on Administering BIG-IP. It goes deeper into local traffic management than the administration course can, covering load balancing, persistence, health monitoring, SNATs, profiles, iRules, and local traffic policies. Lessons combine explanation with hands-on labs and finish with a final lab project that brings the topics together in one working configuration.
What does BIG-IP LTM do, and which topics are covered?
BIG-IP LTM receives client traffic on a virtual server and sends each connection to a healthy pool member. Along the way, it can keep a user on the same server, translate addresses, reuse connections, compress content, and apply custom logic. The course covers all of these, plus initial system setup, VLAN tagging, route domains, and using LTM features to resist SYN floods and common HTTP attacks.
Who is this course designed for?
It is aimed at system and network administrators who install, configure, and administer BIG-IP LTM. That includes application delivery engineers, network engineers who own the load-balancing layer, and NetOps or DevOps staff who change BIG-IP configuration. Engineers taking over an existing BIG-IP deployment will also find the depth useful, especially in the chapters on persistence, monitors, and SNATs.
What practical skills will I gain?
You will be able to build and tune a complete LTM configuration. That means choosing a load-balancing method for a pool, writing a monitor that checks real application content, picking the right persistence profile, fixing SNAT and routing issues, and applying OneConnect and compression. You will also write basic iRules and local traffic policies, then read local traffic statistics to confirm the result.
Does this course give me an F5 certification?
No. Attending the course does not grant any F5 certification. Certifications come only from passing F5 exams. The F5 Certified Administrator, BIG-IP credential requires five exams (F5CAB1 to F5CAB5). The F5 Certified Technology Specialist, BIG-IP LTM credential requires exams 301a and 301b plus a valid administrator certification. The course covers LTM topics, but F5 does not present it as preparation for one specific exam.
Why do load balancing, health monitoring, persistence, and high availability matter?
Together, they decide whether users reach a working application. Load balancing spreads demand so no single server is overwhelmed. Health monitoring removes a failed server before users notice. Persistence keeps a session on one server when it must stay there, such as during an online checkout. Application high availability depends on all three, so one poorly configured monitor can cause an outage that looks like a server fault.
How can the course help my professional development?
It gives you deeper, practical BIG-IP LTM skills that apply directly to production application delivery. Those skills can make you more effective in daily operations, more confident during change windows, and better prepared if you later decide to sit F5 exams. Career outcomes depend on your experience, employer, and job market, so the course supports your development rather than promising a role or salary.
