Course Overview

For years, firewall rules focused on ports and IP addresses. Allow TCP 443 outbound, and anything that speaks HTTPS gets through. That includes file-sharing tools, remote-access utilities, and malware hidden in encrypted sessions. Palo Alto firewall training starts from that weakness: a port number says very little about what is actually crossing the network.

Palo Alto Networks Firewall Essentials: Configuration and Management (EDU-210) is the introductory course for administering Palo Alto Networks next-generation firewalls running PAN-OS 11.1. It shows how the firewall identifies traffic by application with App-ID, by user with User-ID, and by content with Content-ID. Security policy is then written against those identities rather than against ports alone.

The course moves from platform architecture and initial setup into everyday firewall management. Learners connect the firewall to production networks with security zones, build Security policy and NAT policy rules, and attach Security Profiles for threat prevention. URL Filtering, WildFire analysis of unknown files, and SSL/TLS decryption complete the protection picture. The final modules then turn to logs, the Application Command Center (ACC), and reports.

The practical payoff is easy to picture. A rule that once opened port 443 to everyone becomes a short set of rules that allows sanctioned web applications for named groups and blocks an unapproved file-sharing service riding on the same port. When a user reports a failing application, the Traffic log shows which rule matched and why the session ended.

Teams that are reshaping how they protect data centres and branch networks often combine it with wider network security training programmes. It suits engineers who already understand routing and switching and now need to run next-generation firewall policy day to day.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • Explain the Palo Alto Networks portfolio and how PAN-OS processes traffic through its single-pass architecture.
  • Configure initial firewall settings, management access, and administrator accounts with appropriate roles.
  • Manage the candidate and running configurations, commit changes, and save or load configuration snapshots.
  • Connect the firewall to production networks using Layer 3, Layer 2, virtual wire, and tap interfaces mapped to security zones.
  • Create Security policy and NAT policy rules that permit only approved traffic between zones.
  • Apply App-ID to control application usage and replace broad port-based rules with application-based rules.
  • Configure Security Profiles for antivirus, anti-spyware, vulnerability protection, and file blocking, together with URL Filtering and WildFire.
  • Use User-ID for user- and group-based policy, and decryption to find threats inside SSL/TLS traffic.
  • Monitor and analyse activity with Traffic and Threat logs, the ACC, and reports.

Prerequisites

The following is required when attending the course:

  • Basic familiarity with networking concepts including routing, switching, and IP addressing
  • Familiarity with basic security concepts
  • Experience with other security technologies (IPS, proxy, and content filtering) is a plus.

Target Audience

  • Security engineers: design the rule base and threat prevention settings that the rest of the team maintains.
  • Security administrators: handle the daily changes, commits and rule reviews that keep policy accurate.
  • Firewall administrators: move from vendor-neutral firewall skills to PAN-OS specifics such as App-ID and User-ID.
  • Security operations specialists: read Threat logs and the ACC with enough context to judge what the firewall did and why.
  • Network engineers: add security zones, NAT and Security policy to existing routing and switching knowledge.
  • Support and NOC staff: answer "why is this blocked?" tickets by checking rules and logs instead of escalating every case.
  • Data centre and infrastructure specialists: segment server networks and protect east-west traffic between application tiers.
  • Teams deploying Palo Alto Networks firewalls: build a common operating approach before the first production cutover.

Palo Alto Firewall Skills for Hybrid Networks and Zero Trust Segmentation

Organisations across sectors now run applications in on-premises data centres, branch offices and public cloud at the same time. The firewall is often the one control point that sees all of it. Palo Alto firewall training gives engineers the configuration discipline that a hybrid network demands: consistent zones, rules written by application and user, and threat prevention attached to every allow rule. These are also the building blocks of zero trust segmentation, where access between network segments is granted deliberately rather than by default. The EDU-210 course suits international teams that need one consistent standard for PAN-OS administration across several sites. Its lab-based format also suits engineers who learn best by configuring a firewall themselves. For groups that want the content aligned to their own environment, our customised corporate training options explain how team sessions are arranged. Individuals can check upcoming EDU-210 class dates and compare them with project timelines. FAQs

What is the Palo Alto Networks EDU-210 course?

EDU-210 is the official introductory Palo Alto Networks course for configuring and managing next-generation firewalls. Its full title is Firewall Essentials: Configuration and Management, and the current version is based on PAN-OS 11.1. Palo Alto Networks develops the curriculum, which combines instructor-led lecture with hands-on labs in which learners configure, manage and monitor a lab firewall. It is the course most teams take before any advanced Palo Alto Networks firewall training.

What are the prerequisites for the EDU-210 course?

Palo Alto Networks recommends that participants understand routing, switching, and IP addressing, and that they are familiar with basic security concepts. Experience with other security technologies, such as intrusion prevention, proxies, or content filtering, is useful but not required. Learners who are unsure about subnetting or routing tables can refresh those topics first with a routing and switching fundamentals course.

Does EDU-210 cover GlobalProtect and site-to-site VPNs?

GlobalProtect and site-to-site VPNs are included only as supplemental material, not as core modules. The same applies to High Availability and Zone Protection. The core course concentrates on zones, Security and NAT policy, App-ID, Security Profiles, URL Filtering, WildFire, User-ID, decryption, and logging. Learners who need production-level remote-access or VPN design should plan for additional study beyond the core EDU-210 modules.

What practical tasks will I be able to perform after EDU-210?

After the course, a learner should be able to take a firewall from initial setup to a working, monitored policy. That includes setting management access, creating zones and interfaces, writing Security and NAT rules, attaching Security Profiles, and committing changes safely. It also includes enabling user-based rules, defining decryption policy, and using logs to confirm whether a specific session was allowed, denied, or flagged as a threat.

Does EDU-210 lead to a Palo Alto Networks certification?

No, EDU-210 is a training course and does not award a certification on its own. Palo Alto Networks lists EDU-210 as recommended instructor-led training for its Next-Generation Firewall Engineer certification, which requires passing a separate proctored exam. The older PCNSA and PCNSE exams have been retired. Attending the course, passing an exam, and holding a certification are therefore three distinct steps.

Why are Security Profiles needed if a Security policy rule already allows the traffic?

Security Profiles are needed because an allow rule decides only whether a session may pass, not whether its content is safe. Antivirus, anti-spyware, vulnerability protection, and file blocking profiles inspect the permitted traffic for known threats. URL Filtering and WildFire extend that inspection to web categories and unknown files. An allow rule with no profile attached will pass an exploit as long as the application matches, so most teams apply a standard profile group to every allow rule.
