Veritas InfoScale 8.0 Fundamentals for UNIX/Linux: Administration
Course Overview
Most organisations that run Veritas InfoScale use it for two jobs: managing storage for critical UNIX/Linux applications and keeping those applications available when something fails. Veritas InfoScale 8.0 Fundamentals training reflects that by teaching both products in one five-day course. It is designed for IT professionals who need an overview of Veritas InfoScale Storage and Veritas InfoScale Availability. It is also a condensed subset of the separate five-day InfoScale Storage 8.0 and InfoScale Availability 8.0 administration courses.
The course is built in three parts. Storage Foundation Basics covers installing and licensing InfoScale, the product suite and its cloud offerings, and the virtual objects that Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) creates from physical disks. Learners create disk groups, volumes, and file systems, work with different volume layouts, mirror and resize storage, and move data between systems. They also administer the Veritas File System (VxFS).
Cluster Server Basics introduces Veritas Cluster Server (VCS). Topics include high availability concepts, VCS building blocks and architecture, common operations and configuration methods. Learners prepare an application for clustering, configure its service group both online and offline, and set up notifications and triggers.
Cluster Server Additions goes into what happens when things fail. Learners study how VCS handles resource faults, how the Intelligent Monitoring Framework (IMF) detects them, and how cluster communication behaves during system and interconnect failures.
The result is a practical, end-to-end understanding of InfoScale. Administrators who complete it can support existing environments, perform routine changes, and take part in outage recovery with a clear grasp of how storage and clustering fit together.
Course Objectives
- Summarise the InfoScale product suite, its installation tools and cloud support.

Enterprises in every region now run critical UNIX/Linux applications across several data centres and, increasingly, in the cloud. Keeping those applications available while managing fast-growing storage takes consistent skills across every team. Veritas InfoScale 8.0 Fundamentals training gives infrastructure staff a shared baseline in Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas File System and Cluster Server. An administrator in one office can then build a volume, configure a service group or recover a faulted resource the same way as a colleague elsewhere. That consistency simplifies handovers, documentation and incident response, especially for organisations with round-the-clock operations. The course also suits teams standardising their high availability practices before a migration or platform refresh. Individual learners can review dates on our global InfoScale class schedule, and organisations can arrange a private programme for distributed IT teams. FAQs
What is Veritas InfoScale used for?
Veritas InfoScale is used to manage storage and provide high availability for critical applications on UNIX/Linux systems. Its storage components, Veritas Volume Manager and Veritas File System, manage disks, volumes, and file systems. Its availability component, Veritas Cluster Server, monitors applications and fails them over to another server when a fault occurs.
Why choose the Fundamentals course instead of the two full courses?
The Fundamentals course covers the basics of both InfoScale Storage and InfoScale Availability in five days. Attending both full administration courses would take ten days. It suits administrators who need a working overview of the whole product. Those who later need in-depth skills in one area can still take the relevant full course afterwards.
What are the prerequisites for Veritas InfoScale 8.0 Fundamentals?
Knowledge of and hands-on experience with UNIX/Linux system administration is required. Learners should already manage disks, file systems, services, and networking confidently from the command line. Our UNIX and Linux administration courses can help build these skills before enrolling. No previous InfoScale knowledge is needed.
Which job roles is the InfoScale course designed for?
The course is designed for UNIX/Linux system administrators, system engineers, and technical support personnel. It also suits network and SAN administrators and systems integration and development staff who work with InfoScale environments. In each case, it gives a common understanding of how storage and clustering support critical applications.
What hands-on labs are included?
The labs cover installing InfoScale, creating and removing disk groups, volumes, and file systems, and building volumes with different layouts, including erasure-coded volumes. Cluster labs include service group operations, building a service group for a sample application, running a virtual fire drill, editing the configuration offline, and observing fault behaviour and IMF monitoring.
Does InfoScale 8.0 Fundamentals cover password encryption and access control?
Yes, the course covers VCS access control and password encryption as part of the configuration methods lesson. Learners see how administrative access to the cluster is managed and how VCS protects stored credentials. These topics matter for organisations that must control who can change critical cluster configurations.
What does multi-version cluster support mean?
Multi-version cluster support allows nodes running different InfoScale versions to operate in the same cluster for a period, which helps when upgrading. Instead of upgrading every node at once, administrators can move through the cluster in stages. The course introduces this concept within the VCS building blocks lesson.
What is the best next step after InfoScale Fundamentals?
The next step depends on your role. Storage specialists usually continue with Veritas InfoScale Storage 8.0 for UNIX/Linux: Administration, and cluster administrators with Veritas InfoScale Availability 8.0 for UNIX/Linux: Administration. Our [storage and data management courses list related options. Career outcomes depend on experience and employer needs.
