Veritas NetBackup Administration
Course Overview
A backup job that finishes green tells you very little. The real test comes later, when someone needs a deleted folder back or a failed server rebuilt before the business notices. This Veritas NetBackup Administration training is built around that moment. It teaches you to set up NetBackup so that restores are planned, practiced, and predictable.
NetBackup is the enterprise backup platform many data centers rely on to protect file systems, virtual machines, and other workloads from one primary server. Since December 2024, NetBackup has been part of Cohesity, following Cohesity’s combination with Veritas’s data protection business. The current official course is Cohesity NetBackup 11.0: Administration. Many teams still search for it as Veritas NetBackup training, so you will see both names.
The course starts with how the primary server, media servers, and clients divide the work. You then install NetBackup, work in the NetBackup web UI, and handle the security certificates that let hosts trust one another. Storage comes next. BasicDisk and AdvancedDisk storage units come first, followed by Media Server Deduplication Pool (MSDP), cloud storage, and immutable WORM storage.
Policies and schedules decide what gets protected and when. You will create them, run manual and user-directed backups, and restore data through the web UI and the Backup, Archive, and Restore interface. Later modules cover VMware backup and recovery, storage lifecycle policies for duplication and replication, and protection of the NetBackup catalog itself.
Disaster recovery gets practical attention too. If the catalog is lost, you need to know how to bring it back. Ransomware recovery readiness is covered through immutable storage, anomaly detection, and malware scanning.
The final modules deal with reports, upgrades with VxUpdate, and collecting logs when something breaks. You leave with a working knowledge of NetBackup administration that fits daily backup and recovery work, from the 2 a.m. failed job to the quarterly restore test.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Describe the roles of the primary server, media servers, and clients, and explain how NetBackup runs a backup and a restore.
- Install NetBackup and use the NetBackup web UI, including single sign-on, role-based access control, and alerts.
- Configure and manage NetBackup security certificates, including certificate revocation lists and external certificates.
- Configure BasicDisk and AdvancedDisk storage units, storage unit groups, and MSDP deduplication storage.
- Set up cloud storage and MSDP cloud immutable (WORM) storage, and apply anomaly detection and malware scanning.
- Create backup policies and schedules, then run, monitor, and restore file system backups.
- Protect and recover VMware virtual machines, including instant access and agentless restores.
- Use storage lifecycle policies to duplicate and replicate backups, and protect and recover the NetBackup catalog.
- Generate NetBackup reports, plan upgrades with VxUpdate, and collect logs and diagnostic information for troubleshooting.
Prerequisites
Students should be familiar with general network and storage concepts, and the administration and configuration of Windows or Linux operating systems. Knowledge of virtualization and cloud technologies is useful.
Target Audience
- Backup and recovery administrators: learn to design policies and verify restores rather than only watching jobs.
- NetBackup operators and administrators: close gaps in daily tasks such as storage units, certificates, and catalog backups.
- Storage administrators: see how disk, MSDP, cloud, and immutable storage are presented to NetBackup.
- Windows and Linux/UNIX system administrators: understand what happens on protected servers and how to restore them.
- Data protection engineers: connect retention, duplication, and immutability choices to recovery objectives.
- Data center and infrastructure specialists: plan media server placement and storage capacity with real product knowledge.
- Implementation consultants and support engineers: build a consistent baseline for deploying and supporting NetBackup.
- Teams running or planning NetBackup: agree on shared terms and methods before or after go-live.

Data protection teams in most industries now work across on-premises data centers, private clouds, and public cloud storage, often at the same time. That mix is where NetBackup is commonly deployed, and it is where administration skills get tested. Our Veritas NetBackup Administration training focuses on the tasks those teams repeat every week. These include building storage, writing policies, checking job results, and running the restores people actually ask for. Ransomware has changed what a good backup looks like. Teams now need copies that attackers cannot alter and a tested way to bring systems back, so immutable WORM storage, catalog protection, and malware scanning are covered in practical terms. If you are planning a wider skills path, compare this NetBackup administration course with our NetBackup advanced administration course or browse our backup and disaster recovery training. FAQs
What is the Veritas NetBackup Administration course?
It is a fundamentals-level course that teaches you to install, configure, and run NetBackup in an enterprise environment. The current official version is Cohesity NetBackup 11.0: Administration, because NetBackup is now part of Cohesity following its combination with Veritas’s data protection business. The course moves from architecture and storage to policies, backups, restores, VMware protection, and catalog protection. It finishes with routine tasks such as upgrades and log collection.
What does NetBackup do, and what does the course cover?
NetBackup copies data from protected clients to disk, deduplicated, cloud, or tape storage, and restores it when needed. The course covers the primary server, media servers, and clients, along with the NetBackup web UI and security certificates. Storage topics include BasicDisk, AdvancedDisk, MSDP, cloud, and immutable storage. It also covers policies and schedules, file system and VMware backups and restores, storage lifecycle policies, catalog protection, ransomware readiness, reports, VxUpdate upgrades, and logs.
Who should take this course?
Anyone who runs, supports, or is about to take over a NetBackup environment should consider it. That includes backup administrators, NetBackup operators, storage administrators, and Windows or Linux/UNIX system administrators. Data protection engineers, implementation consultants, and support engineers also benefit because the course explains how each NetBackup component behaves. Teams preparing a new deployment can use it to build a shared baseline before go-live.
What are the recommended prerequisites?
The official course page recommends UNIX/Linux or Windows system administration experience. It also lists data protection concepts and terminology, storage concepts, virtualization and cloud technologies, and basic networking and system security awareness. Previous NetBackup experience is not listed as a requirement, since this is the entry point to NetBackup administration. If you are unsure whether you are ready, our team can talk it through with you.
Which skills will I build?
You will be able to set up and run a working NetBackup environment. That means configuring disk, deduplication, cloud, and immutable storage, writing policies and schedules, and running and monitoring backups. You will also restore files and VMware virtual machines. On top of that, you will manage certificates, keep extra copies with storage lifecycle policies, protect the catalog, generate reports, upgrade with VxUpdate, and gather logs for troubleshooting.
Is this a certification course?
No. It is a skills-focused training course, and attending it does not award a certification. Cohesity lists it as recommended preparation for the Cohesity Certified Protection Professional (NetBackup and NetBackup Appliances) exam, COH285. Certification requires passing that exam separately. The exam also covers NetBackup Appliances and recommends around nine months of hands-on experience, so the course is one part of exam preparation, not all of it.
Why does the course focus on restores, deduplication, and immutable storage?
These three decide whether a backup is useful on the day you need it. A job can report success while the data behind it cannot be restored in time, and regular restore tests prove that recovery works. MSDP deduplication keeps storage costs manageable, so you can retain enough history. Immutable WORM storage stops backup copies from being changed or deleted early, which matters when ransomware goes after backups first.
How does this training support my professional development?
It gives you practical NetBackup administration skills you can apply directly to backup and recovery work. Many professionals use it to formalize skills they picked up on the job or to prepare for more responsibility in data protection. It is also the foundation course before advanced NetBackup study. Career outcomes depend on your experience, employer, and market, so the course supports your growth but cannot guarantee it.
